Perhaps we are familiar with the concept of schadenfreude, which Merriam Webster’s dictionary describes as “enjoyment obtained from seeing or hearing about the troubles of others.” If we’re honest with ourselves, we all may fall into a bit of schadenfreude at times, particularly when we feel the person experiencing the troubles had it coming to them. Though certainly far from the love of neighbor our Lord calls us to, it’s easy to be tempted to delight when someone whom we dislike, or whom we feel deserves it, experiences some hardship or other.

This Catechetical Sunday, we are reminded of beautiful truth: we are not alone. Our theme, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me to bring good news to the poor,” calls us to remember that the Holy Spirit is always with us, guiding, strengthening, and sending us to share God’s love with others.

Our catechists live this mission each week. They walk alongside children, young people, and families teaching the faith, listening to their questions, encouraging them in difficult moments, and helping them discover that God is present in every part of their lives.

Catechesis is more than teaching lessons. It is accompanying people on their journey of faith and reminding them that, whatever challenges they face, God has not abandoned them. Through the Holy Spirit, we are called to bring hope to those who are struggling, comfort to those who are hurting, and good news to those who feel forgotten.

We are Grateful for YOU!

Today, we give thanks for our catechists, parents, volunteers, and all who help pass on the gift of faith. May the Holy Spirit renew their hearts and give them courage to proclaim the Gospel with joy.

May we all remember: You are not alone. The Spirit of the Lord is upon us, and He sends us forth to bring His love and good news to one another.
