Statement by Archbishop Thomas Wenski on the death of Pope Francis

Pope Francis' legacy will be defined by a series of 'firsts'

In Evangelii Gaudium ('Joy of the Gospel'), Pope Francis said: I prefer a Church which is bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather than a Church which is unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its security.

Pope Francis saw the Church as a “field hospital” called to tend to the wounded on the battlefields of life, offering her medicine of mercy to all. The Church, Pope Francis insisted, is not only to teach but to act—to embrace those on the periphery and to bring the light of Christ to the darkest corners of society.

Shortly after his election as Pope, his first visit outside of Rome was to the marooned African boat people washed ashore on the small Italian island of Lampedusa. He never tired of defending the displaced migrant nor embracing the marginalized or excluded, whether at a papal audience in St. Peter’s Square or in a prison.

Join Father Davis in Italy: See the New Pope!

Join Father Davis, November 12-22, 2025, on the trip of a lifetime to go to beautiful Italy during the Jubilee Year 2025.

As you may know, the holy doors of each of the four patriarchal basilicas in Rome are only opened once every 25 years. The pope has declared this hallowed tradition as an opportunity to receive special graces and a plenary indulgence for all pilgrims who pass through these doors.

In addition to this extraordinary opportunity, our tour will include a visit to the shrine of Saint Rita of Cascia, the site of the Eucharistic miracle in Lanziano, the shrine of the apparition of Saint Michael the Archangel, San Giovanni Rotundo and the tomb of Padre Pio of Pietrielcina. The tour will include a visit to the shrine of the Blessed Mother of Loreto, and a visit to the historical monastery at Monte Casino of Saint Benedict and his sister Saint Scholastica.

We will participate in a general audience with the new Pope. Coupled with excellent hotel accommodations and superior Italian cuisine, it will be an unrivaled trip of travel excellence. Registrations are being accepted. First come first serve.
