Pope Francis' legacy will be defined by a series of
'firsts'
In Evangelii Gaudium ('Joy of the Gospel'), Pope Francis said: I prefer a
Church which is bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on the
streets, rather than a Church which is unhealthy from being confined and from
clinging to its security.
Pope Francis saw the Church as a “field hospital” called to tend to the
wounded on the battlefields of life, offering her medicine of mercy to all. The
Church, Pope Francis insisted, is not only to teach but to act—to embrace those on the periphery and to bring the light of Christ to the darkest corners of society.
Shortly after his election as Pope, his first visit outside of Rome was to the marooned African boat people washed ashore on the small Italian island of Lampedusa. He never tired of defending the displaced migrant nor embracing the marginalized or excluded, whether at a papal audience in St. Peter’s Square or in a prison.

Dear San Pablo Family,
May the Peace of the Risen Lord be with you all!
The fifty days of the Easter season allow us to reflect on the undeniable
and hopeful reality of Jesus' Resurrection. This is why, throughout the first
week of Easter, we have been reading Gospel passages in our daily
Masses that recount the various appearances of the Risen Lord to His
apostles. These appearances were meant to share with them the good news of the Resurrection and to strengthen their spirits so that they could bear witness to their faith in Jesus and
persevere in the work of evangelization. Thanks to the apostles and countless other Christians
who have come before us, we too can proclaim and rejoice in this truth of faith, inspiring us to
continue sharing the joy of the Gospel with our neighbors.
This past Monday, April 21st, the entire world, and Catholic Christians in particular, awoke to
the sad news of the passing of our beloved Pope Francis, who shepherded the flock of the universal Church for twelve years after his election as Supreme Pontiff in 2013. Pope Francis passed away at the age of 88 after suffering from several months of health issues that ultimately led to his death. It is remarkable that, despite being urged to rest completely in his final days, he chose to continue his evangelizing mission, culminating publicly with the Urbi et Orbi
blessing he imparted on Easter Sunday, just a few hours before his passing. Let us ask God to
grant him eternal rest and comfort us with fond memories of him, allowing us to honor him with
gratitude rather than letting sadness and despair invade our hearts. Thank you, dear Pope
Francis, for all you did for God and your sisters and brothers.
I also invite you to pray that, in the coming days, the cardinal electors may arrive in Rome from
their countries and begin the conclave, during which the election of a new Supreme Pontiff and
successor of Saint Peter will take place. It’s important to remember that this election will occur
in an atmosphere of prayer and discernment, guided by the Holy Spirit. The Cardinals, like all
Christians in the Church, are instruments in God’s hands, and they must seek to fulfill God’s
will for the good of the Church.
Finally, I want to inform you that next week, I will be away from San Pablo. Father Anthony
Cardone will be in my place, assisting you with your spiritual needs.
God bless you always,
In Christ,
Father Oscar Perez Dudamel
