Traditional Blessing of Easter Baskets
Traditional Blessing of Easter Baskets
on Holy Saturday at 12:00pm Noon at Rosary.
The blessing of Easter baskets is a meaningful tradition in
many Catholic parishes, particularly in Eastern European and
Slavic communities. This practice, which typically takes place
on Holy Saturday, involves the faithful bringing baskets filled
with a variety of foods to be blessed by the priest/deacon.
The significance of this blessing is multifaceted:
- Symbol of the Resurrection:
The foods in the basket such
as eggs, bread, ham, butter, cheese, and sometimes sweets are symbolic of the new life and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The egg, in particular, symbolizes our new life in Christ.
- Thanksgiving for God's Gifts:
The blessing of the Easter
basket also reflects gratitude for the abundance of God's blessings.
These foods, which had been set aside for fasting during
Lent, are now blessed to celebrate the end of that
period and the joy of Easter.
- Family and Community:
This tradition fosters a sense of
family and community as families prepare and share the
blessed foods together. It emphasizes the importance of both
spiritual nourishment (through the blessing and prayer) and
physical nourishment (through the food itself)
in the Catholic faith.
In essence, the blessing of Easter baskets is not only about the
ritual of having food consecrated but also about reinforcing
themes of renewal, gratitude,
and the joy of Christ's resurrection.
Sleep in Heavenly Peace
The Utica Chapter, founded n 2021, is committed to

Pontifical Good Friday Collection
Pope Francis has asked out parish to support the Pontifical
Good Friday Collection, which helps Christians in the
Holy Land, where they are now less than 2% of the population.
Your support is essential to help the Church
minister in parishes, provide Catholic schools, and offer
religious education. The Pontifical Good Friday Collection
also helps to preserve the sacred shrines of Christianity,
including in Jerusalem, Nazareth and Bethlehem.
