Pope Francis' legacy will be defined by a series of 'firsts'

In Evangelii Gaudium ('Joy of the Gospel'), Pope Francis said: I prefer a Church which is bruised, hurting and dirty because it has been out on the streets, rather than a Church which is unhealthy from being confined and from clinging to its security.

Pope Francis saw the Church as a “field hospital” called to tend to the wounded on the battlefields of life, offering her medicine of mercy to all. The Church, Pope Francis insisted, is not only to teach but to act—to embrace those on the periphery and to bring the light of Christ to the darkest corners of society.

Shortly after his election as Pope, his first visit outside of Rome was to the marooned African boat people washed ashore on the small Italian island of Lampedusa. He never tired of defending the displaced migrant nor embracing the marginalized or excluded, whether at a papal audience in St. Peter’s Square or in a prison.

En Evangelii Gaudium (“La alegría del Evangelio”), el Papa Francisco dijo: “Prefiero una Iglesia magullada, herida y sucia porque ha salido a la calle, que una Iglesia malsana por estar recluida y por aferrarse a su propia seguridad”. Consideró a la Iglesia como un “hospital de campaña” llamado a atender a los heridos en los campos de batalla de la vida, ofreciendo su medicina de misericordia a todos.

La Iglesia, insistió el Papa Francisco, no sólo debe enseñar, sino actuar, abrazar a los que están en la periferia y llevar la luz de Cristo a los rincones más oscuros de la sociedad.

Su primera visita fuera de Roma, poco después de su elección como Papa, fue a los náufragos africanos abandonados en la pequeña isla italiana de Lampedusa. Y nunca se cansó de defender a los emigrantes desplazados o de abrazar a los marginados o excluidos, ya fuera en una audiencia papal en la Plaza de San Pedro o en una cárcel.

Seeing is believing! Since cellphone screens connect us instantly to social media, live TV, and loved ones’ faces near and far, “Doubting Thomas” could be our patron saint: “Unless I see, I will not believe!” But how comforting for any of us who share Thomas’s doubt, or love “doubters” who do, to see how kindly Jesus responds.

By offering the very evidence that Thomas demanded, Jesus doesn’t scold Thomas, but seems to understand such skepticism. Could Jesus have been thinking of us, who long to believe that “Jesus is risen!” but see so much suffering, and perhaps even cause some, that we wonder, how could something so wonderful be true? In today’s reading from the Acts of the Apostles, the risen Jesus’ healing love comforts through disciples who love others. In Revelation, “our brother John” doesn’t just claim he saw Jesus alive, but passes on Jesus’ life-giving words, “Do not be afraid.” Seeing Jesus in others is believing!

Ver es Creer

¡Ver es creer! Desde que los teléfonos celulares nos conectan instantáneamente a las redes sociales, televisión en vivo y los rostros de nuestros seres queridos de cerca y lejos, “Tomás el incrédulo” podría ser nuestro santo patrón: “¡hasta que no lo vea, no lo creeré!” Pero que reconfortante para cualquiera de nosotros que compartimos las dudas de Tomás, o nos gustan los “incrédulos” que lo hacen, para ver qué tan amable responde Jesús. Al ofrecer la misma evidencia que Tomás pedía, Jesús no reprendió a Tomás, sino parece que entendió su incredulidad.

¿Es que acaso Jesús estaba pensando en nosotros, que anhelábamos creer que “¡Jesús resucitó!”, pero ver demasiado sufrimiento y quizá incluso haber causado algo, que nos preguntamos, cómo algo tan extraordinario sería verdad? En las lecturas de hoy del libro de los Hechos de los Apóstoles, el amor de Jesús resucitado da consuelo por medio de sus discípulos que amaban a los demás. En el libro del Apocalipsis, “nuestro hermano Juan” no solo afirma que vio vivo a Jesús, sino que transmite las palabras de Jesús que dan vida: “¡No tengan miedo!” ¡Ver a Jesús en los demás es creer!

On Sunday, April 27th, we participate in a special collection for mission parishes in the United States and its Pacific and Caribbean dependencies.

This Appeal strengthens the Church at home by supporting Catholic communities in need. It assists dioceses that serve the pastoral needs of Hispanics and other ethnic groups. It enables Catholic parishes in poor and remote communities to provide Mass, the sacraments, and religious education for their people. The Catholic Home Missions Appeal gives us a chance to respond to the Father’s call to love our neighbor.

La Segunda Colecta de este Fin de Semana és para las Misiones Católicas

Este Domingo, 27 de abril participaremos en una colecta especial por las parroquia misionarias en los Estados Unidos y en sus dependencias del pacifico y el Caribe.

Esta colecta fortalece la iglesia domestica brindando soporte a las comunidades católicas hispanas y de otros grupos. Con ello se posibilita que las parroquias católicas de comunidades remotas y pobres puedan celebrar Misas y proveer los sacramentos y educación religiosa a sus gentes. El Llamado para las Misiones Católicas nos da la oportunidad de responder al llamado de nuestro Padre de amar a nuestro vecino.

Friday, May 2nd, is the First Friday of the month. We will have confessions at 7:30 am, and Mass is at 8:00 am.
